Absalom Frank Bear was born at Hickory Point in Miller County, Mo. on March 15, 1893 and died in Jackson, Miss at 9 pm on Thursday, Jan. 8, 1942 at the age of 48 years, 9 months, and 24 days. He was the youngest son of Absalom and Mary Catherine (Spearman) Bear.

His parents, three sisters and two brothers preceded him in death. Three sisters, Mrs. Martha Atteberry, Miss Edna Bear, and Mrs. Zella Livingston, and one brother George survive.

Mr. Bear attended the Hickory Point public school, graduated from the Iberia Academy, and Drury College. His college work was interrupted by the World War. He enlisted in the U S Navy, was soon transferred to the Marine Corps, and sent to France, where he participated in actual service with the 2nd Division. For valor in action at St. Etienne, France, on October 4, 1918, he was awarded the United States Distinguished Service Cross.

Following the Armistice, he attended the University of Paris, France,and on his return to America he completed his work for his A. B. degree in Drury College, He was immediately employed by the Bell Telephone Company and continued with this organization to the day of his death.

For several years he was manager of the company at Shreveport, La. and since 1937 has been located at Jackson, Miss.

Frank was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the American Legion, and of the Kappa Alpha Social fraternity, and was a deacon in the Christian Church at Jackson at the time of his death.

Funeral services were conducted at Iberia Christian Church by the Rev. A. L. Alexander of Eldon, and burial was made in Hickory Point
Cemetery.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Hospital Apprentice Absalom F. Bear (NSN: 303756), United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving as a Corpsman attached to the Fifth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near St. Etienne, France, 4 October 1918. During a heavy bombardment, Apprentice Bear went to an advanced observation post, dressed the wounds of a comrade, and conducted him to the rear.
