Margaret Mary Haggerty was born on July 6, 1874 in New Orleans to Dennis Barry Haggerty (1824-1890) and Mary Barry (1834-1902), both were Irish immigrants. She grew up with 9 siblings. Her father owned a cotton pickery business.
Margaret decided to join the Catholic Order of the Marionites of Holy Cross, just as three of her aunts had done, on September of 1893. She became a Novitiate on February 22, 1895. She made her eternal vows of profession on August 28, 1895 with the name of Sister Francis Xavier Haggerty.
The Monastery and school were located on Rampart and Gallier Street, in the 'Bywater' neighborhood of New Orleans. She served as 'Provincial' at the Academy of Holy Angels for over 20 years.
Sister Xavier died on September 16, 1965 at the age of 91. She is most likely buried in the Marianite mausoleum at Our Lady of Holy Cross College in the Algiers section of New Orleans.
