A small band of family and friends hunting deer in Union on Saturday lost one of their own in what's being investigated as a fatal accident.
Details in the death of 23-year-old Jeffrey Parker of Pacolet will be sorted out as the investigation wraps up, said Lt. Robert McCullough, a Columbia-based spokesman for the S.C. Department of Natural Resources. The particulars include determining whether the young man was wearing proper safety attire, or whether alcohol was involved.
Parker, his father and two others had pulled over to hunt in a wooded area off of West Springs Highway. They all knew one another.
Parker was shot at about 10 a.m. by one of his friends with a .30-06 caliber rifle, McCullough said. The shot is believed to have been made from "some distance" -- not at close range or point-blank.
"The whole incident right now appears to be an accident, but we're investigating, and have to talk to the coroner on that," McCullough said.
Union County Coroner William Holcombe and Sheriff Howard Wells could not be reached for comment Saturday.
Any charges to stem from the investigation would be made by the Natural Resources Department. The maximum charge for a hunting fatality is three years in prison, McCullough said.
"We'd like it to be more rare," he said. "That's why we encourage everyone to take our hunter safety courses. We'd like for it to be nonexistent. But at this point, we do have a few a year that are fatal."
