Obituary: "A memorial service has been scheduled for next Sunday for Augustus Aldrich, 86, who disappeared July 5 while hiking Mt. Katahdin in Maine.
Aldrich, one of southern Vermont's most colorful characters and an accomplished mountain climber and naturalist, was lost while climbing Mt. Katahdin in dense fog. An intensive search failed to turn up any sign of him.
He lived all his life on a farm just south of Weathersfield Center.
The memorial service will be held at 2 PM, Sept. 29 at the North Springfield Baptist Church."
There were a series of articles in the "Bennington Banner" newspaper concerning the loss of Augustus while hiking on Mt. Katahdin in Maine. Tragically, a friend of his, Hollister Kent, died of a heart attack while searching for him. As far as I discovered, his body was never found.
