PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Richard A. Abbott Sr., 48, of Naranga Avenue, formerly of Holden and Rutland, Mass., was killed Monday in a two-car accident on Route 70 in Lake Okeechobee, Fla. His wife, Barbara (Montville) Abbott, formerly of Worcester, Mass., was also killed in the accident.
They leave four sons, Derek L. Abbott of Port St. Lucie, Richard A. Abbott Jr. of Boca Raton, Dana Stirling of Palm Bay, Fla., and Daniel Stirling of Shrewsbury, Mass.; two daughters, Deborah Borges of North Walpole, N.H., and Marianne King of West Ossipee, N.H.; and eight grandchildren..
He leaves his mother, Barbara Smith, and his stepfather, Edward T. "Ted" Smith, both of Northboro; two sisters; Joyce Duggins of Port St. Lucie and Sharon Moore of Holden, Mass.
She leaves a brother, George "Sonny" Montville of Worcester.
He was born in Holden, son of Ralph Abbott Jr. and Barbara (Sterns) Abbott, and later lived in Rutland. He lived here 10 years.
Mr. Abbott graduated from Wachusett Regional High School in Holden.
He was a sergeant first class in the Army, where he served for 21 years, retiring in 1979.
Mr. Abbott was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving four tours of duty in Vietnam. He was wounded in action, and received a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star, a Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, a Gold Recruiting Badge, an Army Commendation Badge and a Meritorious Service Medal.
Mr. Abbott was a member of the American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans and the Masons.
Mrs. Abbott graduated from a high school in Worcester.
The funeral, with military honors, will be held at 3 p.m. today in Forest Hills Funeral Home, 2001 S.W. Murphy Road, Palm City, Fla.
Calling hours at the funeral home are 1 to 3 p.m. today.
Members of local Post 318, American Legion, will meet there at 3 p.m. today to conduct a ritual.
