Carl T. Heaton, 95, a former Granite City postmaster and retired president of the Tri-City Labor Temple Association, died at 9:07 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, 1980, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center.

For the last four years, Mr. Heaton had resided at the Madison County Nursing Home. He was transferred to the medical center when he became ill three weeks ago.

Mr. Heaton had lived in Granite City 73 years. He was born Sept. 3, 1885, in Indiana and resided in Elwood, Ind., before coming here.

He served as president of the Labor Temple Association from 1936 until 1976 when he retired, just prior to his 91st birthday. He was honored by the association in recognition of his 40 years of service in March 1976.

Mr. Heaton formerly was employed at Granite City Steel, where he became business agent for Lodge 11 of the Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel and Tin Workers.

He served as Granite City postmaster from 1945 to 1954.

Mr. Heaton was selected as one of the first jury commissioners for Madison County in 1954 and later was named head jailer at the Madison County Jail in Edwardsville. Upon his retirement as jailer, Mr. Heaton became a clerk in the Third Judicial Circuit Court in Edwardsville, a position from which he formally retired at age 90.

He was a 70-year member of Granite City EAgles Aerie 1126.

His wife, Mrs. Jennie Heaton, died Feb. 25, 1958.

Among the survivors are one son, Charles Parkinson of Granite City; a brother, Paul Heaton of Newport, Mich,; three sisters, Mrs. Grace West of Alberta, Canada, Mrs. Mac (Jean) McKenna of Sun City, Ariz., and Mrs. June Umbach of St. Petersburg, Fla.; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at Pieper Funeral Home, 1929 Cleveland Blvd., where friends may call at the present time. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Edwardsville Township.
