Lawrence served as a Able-Bodied Seaman, S.S. John Harvey, Merchant Marines during World War II.

He resided in Baltimore, Maryland prior to the war.

The S.S. John Harvey sailed from Oran, Algeria to Bari, Italy carrying a secret cargo of 2,000 M47A1 mustard gas bombs, each of which held 60–70 lb of sulfur mustard. While in the port of Bari they were attacked by German Ju-88 bombers causing massive explosions while the ships were unloading supplies.

Over 1,000 people were killed, "25" ships were sunk, and " 3 " other ships were damaged beyond repair.

Lawrence was declared "Missing In Action" in this attack during the war.

He was posthumously awarded the Mariner's Medal and the Combat Bar with a Star!
