James arrived in Vietnam 1 August 1968 and was assigned to CAP 2-8-1, CACO2-8, 2nd CAG Combined Action.
James died as result of gunshot wounds to the body from hostile small arms fire when his platoon went to the assistance of other Marines under attack by a large number of hostile forces.
James served his country for 4 years.
Survived by his parents, George W and Evelyn H Bateman and his brother, John R Bateman all of Route #1, Box 284, Mundelein, Illinois.
Posthumously awarded the Silver Star.
