Barbara Elizabeth (Karnos) Benson was born February 8, 1937 to Frank and Evelyn Karnas. Barb graduated from Bird Island High School. In 1956 she married Stanford Benson at First Lutheran Church in Lake Lillian. Upon moving to Murdock, Barb was employed at Gakens Café. She became active on the Dahl Chevrolet Bowling team where Stan was employed and was a busy housewife. In 1959, Mark and twin brother Todd were born. Barb was also involved with Stan at the local VFW post 5342, where she held many positions as a proud auxiliary member. In September of 1964, daughter Jill was welcomed into the family. In 1975, the family moved to Alexandria where Barb became employed at the VFW Post 936 as a waitress, bingo worker and auxiliary officer. She held many seats including local, district and state positions while gaining life membership, which she was extremely proud of. Barb was a very happy and loving grandmother to a grandson, Blake of which much time was spent with mom, Jill shopping and sharing many happy moments. She also enjoyed visiting with Todd’s cats, Dolly and Bear. Barb enjoyed reminiscing about old friends and activities in Murdock which was always considered home. Barb was a fun loving, active gal who along with best friends Avis, Carol, Lila, and countless others enjoyed cards, dancing, traveling to see their favorite bands and even a few “Bud Lights”. She always had and took time to call family and always be “Mom”.
Barb will be remembered for her faith, caring ways, humor and spirit and her love for family and friends which came before any hardships which caused her suffering or sorrow.
Barbara passed away at Bethany Home at the age of 78. She is survived by her son, Todd; daughter, Jill; two grandsons, Stan Benson and Blake (fiancé, Tiffany) Benson; brother in law, David (Connie) Benson; sister in law, Sharon (Dale) Koenen; and several nieces and nephews. Barb was preceded in death by husband, Stan; infant son, Mark; parents, Frank and Evelyn; step father, Leonard; and brother, Richard.
