Pvt. U.S. Army, Civil War, Company D, 145th Pa. Vols.
8/27/1862 - 12/13/1862     K.I.A.

After their father died in 1854, Franklin and his siblings were sent to live with their uncle, Marcus Lewis. Franklin's best friend was his cousin, Horatio F. Lewis. He was an apprentice at the local Erie newspaper, which later printed the notice of his death. The two joined the 145th Penna. together, when Franklin was 18 and Horatio was 17.

Franklin was killed during the Battle of Fredericksburg on December 13th, 1862, at the age of 18. He was hit on the head by a shell, and his features disfigured so badly that he was unable to be identified. Days after the battle, he was identified only by papers in his pocket. He was buried where he fell and his family erected a tombstone in Erie, but there was no body for the grave. Family lore has it that Franklin's body was removed from its original place in the 1980's or 1990's and placed in the Fredericksburg cemetery atop Marye's Heights in an unknown plot.
