Benton, a Negro, was condemned for the February 14, 1927 murder of a white farmer, Bob_E._Morgan, in Crosby County. Another negro, Son Gipson, received a 50 year sentence. Benton was the 39th person (32nd negro) executed in Texas' electric chair.

Robert Lee Benton, alias Robert Stanley, was a cotton picker working for Spur rancher Bob Morgan. Eye witnesses said that on Tuesday, Feb. 15, 1927, Morgan had gone to the cotton field where Benton was working, and after a wage dispute, Benton forced Morgan off of his horse, had him walk two to three miles, crossing the Dickens-Crosby county line, and shot him three times.
Crosby County Sheriff_Elmer_Reed
caught up with the 30-year old Benton, six years his senior, in Fort Worth several days later, and on Feb. 10, 1928, Benton, and George_J._Hassell, a confessed murderer of 13, were electrocuted at the Texas Department of Corrections at Huntsville.
