He became a doctor after the war and prepared legal documents for a fee.

Believe it had to do with EBA and his Civil War service with the Fredericksburg Artillery. I believe Joseph helped EBA after EBA's fathers houses were partially destroyed by Yankee forces while trying to defeat Confederate forces in Dec 1862.
