Presbyterian minister born in Green County Tennessee. Married August 28, 1850 in Indiana. Preached for a short time in Paris, IL before he died.

He was 5' 8'' tall with auburn hair, blue eyes and a light complexion.

He joined the Union side of the Civil War on Sept. 10, 1861 and was mustered in for 3 years on Oct. 10 1861. He was 39 yrs old and joined as a Sgt. He served in Co. E of the 66th Illinois U.S. Infantry. He was promoted to 2nd Lt.
His unit fought in the battle of Shiloh and it may have been there or one of the others after that he was captured and imprisoned.
He was dismissed May 5th, 1863, Revoked, Honorably Discharged Aug. 13th 1863. He joined again on June 6th 1864 for 100 days. He was in Company C of the 135th Illinois Infantry and joined as a Captain in Mattoon Illinois. The 135th guarded the Iron Mountain Railroad and a few other places. He mustered out in Mattoon on Sept. 28th 1864. He joined again as a Captain on Feb 14th, 1865 for 1 yr. and mustered in at Camp Butler, Illinois. This time he was in Co. C of the 150th Illinois Infantry which was sent to Georgia to occupy West Point. He served until Jan 16th, 1866 and mustered out in Atlanta, Ga. and was ordered to Springfield Illinois where he received final pay and was discharged.
