Eugene L. Johnson, 90, of Fremont, formerly of Burt County, died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at Edgewood Vista in Fremont.

He was born Dec. 28, 1913, in Oakland to Arvid and Eliese "Lizzie" (Kohler) Johnson.

He attended Alder Grove School in Craig. He farmed with his father and then rented some land. For a time, he lived on the rented land and drove back and forth, helping his father with farming. In 1940, his father turned the farming operation over to Eugene. In 1951, Eugene bought out his brothers and sisters and purchased the farm of his father in section 15 of Burt County. He farmed this farm until 1990 when he retired and later in May 1991, the Johnsons moved into Fremont.

He married June E. Frederikson on Sept. 29, 1942, in Swaburg. June was a twin sister of Junis, who married Donald Johnson, Eugene's brother. (Donald and Junis were killed in a traffic accident on Dec. 7, 1990.}

Donald and Eugene farmed a mile from each other and did a lot of sharing labor throughout the years. In later years, they did custom hay baling with each having their own rig and serving many local farmers more than 10 years.

He enjoyed farming as well as visiting with people. He never knew a stranger, and loved to sing his special version of the birthday song to everyone.

He was a champion in horseshoe pitching for years, always winning local fair championships as well as traveling to many tournaments. He amassed in excess of 100 trophies and in his heyday, averaged 80-85 percent ringers.

Eugene and June also enjoyed bowling for more than 45 years, and between individual and team awards they amassed more than 100 trophies in the sport.

They enjoyed playing cards, developing new friendships and other social events after moving to Fremont.

Survivors include: his wife, June; a son, Jerry (and wife, Karen) Johnson of Fremont; four grandchildren, Jonathan Johnson of Seattle, Mike (and wife, Vicki) McNealy of Louisville, Patrick (and wife, Jeanette) McNealy of Albuquerque, N.M., and Kim (Mrs. Ed) Timmons of Guthrie, Okla.; and two great-grandchildren, Miranda and Mikayla McNealy of Albuquerque.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Harold and Donald Johnson, and sisters, Lucille Richards and Florence Shrago.

The funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Sinai Lutheran Church in Fremont with the Rev. Michael Ostrom officiating.

Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. today at Ludvigsen Mortuary in Fremont with the family receiving friends from 6:30-8 p.m.

Burial will be in Elim Lutheran Church at Swaburg following the funeral luncheon at Sinai Lutheran Church.
