American Basketball Coach. Lewis, born Guy Vernon Lewis II, served as the head coach of the University of Houston's basketball team from 1956 to 1986, leading them to five Final Four appearances. After serving in the Second World War, he played basketball at the University of Houston until graduating in 1947. Lewis became an assistant coach with the Cougars in 1953 and then three years later, head coach, a job he would hold until retiring in 1986. As coach, he posted a 592-279 record over his 33 seasons and led his team to 27 straight winning seasons with 14 trips to the NCAA College Basketball Tournament (going to the Final Four five times). Among the leading players that he coached at Houston included Elvin Hayes, Don Chaney, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Clyde Drexler. Lewis was one of the first coaches in the region to actively recruit African-American players. He also was the coach of the famed "Phi Slama Jama" fast breaking Houston teams of the early 1980s. In 1995 Lewis was honored by the university when they named the basketball arena, "Guy V. Lewis Court at Hofheinz Pavilion". His coaching career was also honored when he was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007 and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013.
