GEORGE HENRY PAYNE, youngest living child of John and Frances Duncan Payne, was born near Caldwell, Kansas, April 11, 1890. At a very young age he came with his parents to their homestead Northwest of Enid, Oklahoma, and lived there a number of years. As a young man he went to Oak Hill, Kansas, where he met Catherine Solts. They were united in marriage at Abilene, Kansas, August 15, 1917. They returned to Enid and within a month he became a member of the Armed Forces (U S Army). He was discharged in 1919 and they moved Northwest of Enid where he began working for the Santa Fe Railroad. They later moved to Carrier where he was a maintenance man for the Frisco Railroad. They resided in Carrier for 19 years. While there he became a member of the Congregational Church. He was then transferred to Goltry where he became a Post Commander of the American Legion Post No. 43. In 1962 they returned to Carrier where they resided until his death. He passed away February 17, 1964 in a local hospital at the age of 73 years, 10 months and 6 days. His parents, one sister, Sadie, and two brothers preceded him in death. Left to survive him are his wife, Catherine of the home, one brother, Charles W., Northwest of Enid, and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was a very devoted husband and although they had no children of their own, he was dearly loved by all his nieces and nephews. His passing will leave a vacancy that cannot be filled.
