Vernon George Gaugert was the oldest of five children born to Wilmer & Katharine B. (Pfeifer) Gaugert. He was born March 8, 1928 in Farmington, Wisconsin. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Helenville. He also attended the school.
He attended school until the eighth grade, when he entered the work world. He worked on various farms, in between farm jobs he worked at Union Upholstery.
He joined the United States Army, Aug. 19, 1948, transferred to the United States Air Force in about July 1949. Went to Fort Knox Kentucky for his Basic Training, to Tucson, Arizona for his O. J. T. training. After his training he was stationed at Wiesbotten Air Force Base, Germany. He came back to the United States, and became a casual, waiting for reassignment at Shanute, Air Force Base, Illinois. He next assignment was to Andrews Air Force Base in Washington D. C. (Maryland), and then to Alaska from July 1954 to February of 1956.
After Alaska he returned to his Wisconsin home, while on leave there he met his future wife, Barbara M Zielsdorf of Watertown. She joined him at his next assignment, Turner Air Force Base, Albany, Georgia. Where they were married May 7, 1956 They remained in Albany from May 1956 to January 1963. All four of their children were born there.
He went to 90270 Medical Supervisors School, in Montgomery, Alabama in 1960, where he spent six months. Then on to Africa from February 1964 til
Palm Sunday 1965. His family returned to Barbara's home town of Watertown,
until his return. After his return the family moved to his next assignment at K. I. Sawyer Michigan. They remained there until his retirement from the service in August of 1968.
He spent 20 years in the Air Force, serving as a medic. Some of this accomplished in his career, was that he was on call to assist after two airplane crashes. He also delivered a set of triplets, while assigned to the hospital in Albany, Georgia.
After a retirement from the Air Force he started another 22 year career
working for Seven Up Bottling Co in Watertown from 1968 to 1990. The family made there home in Watertown, living at 215 S Monroe St. from Aug 1968 to July 1994. After which they sold there home, and moved to 105 Aztalan Drive in Johnson Creek, where they have since resided.
He watching various sporting events. Enjoyed playing golf, and was an excellent bowler. Having at least one 300 game. He also enjoyed watching the Young and the Restless.
He was a member of the Watertown V. F. W. #5709, The Watertown Amvets #35, and the Johnson Creek American Legion #______. He was a past member of the Watertown American Legion, and The Lueker Club.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Barbara, of Johnson Creek. Two sons, Richard of Racine, and Henry of Watertown. Two daughters; Mrs. Debra (Larry) Ready, and Mrs. Donna (Michael) Schubert of Watertown. Seven grandchildren; Patrick (Leslie) Ready, of Pennsauken, New Jersey; Mrs. Catherine (Eric) McDaniel, of Madison; Adam Ready of Watertown, Martha Dantuma of Justice, Illinois, Shaun (Stephanie) Ready of Waterloo, Iowa, Richard Jr and Brett Gaugert of Fort Atkinson. Two great grandchildren, with a third on the way.
