Gladys was the daughter of Dr. Olaus O. SOVDE (1873-1947) and Olena Henrietta GORDON (1881-1972).

Gladys was raised in Wisconsin, being enumerated at Hickory Grove, Grant Co., Wisconsin, Coon Valley, Vernon Co., Wisconsin, and Winneconne, Winnebago Co., Wisconsin, in the 1910, 1920, and 1930 US Censuses, respectively.

Gladys married James Flynn KAHLENBERG on 10 July 1937 at her parents home at Scandinavia, Waupaca Co., Wisconsin, in a ceremony officiated by her father. Her sisters, Evangaline and Mrs. F. B. Hebal, and his brother, Robert O., participated in the wedding.

WEDDING The former Miss Sovde was on the staff of the Woodrow Wilson junior high school here as librarian and instructor in Latin. She is a graduate of St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn., where she was affiliated with Delta Chi sorority, and for the past 6 years had taught in Manitowoc public schools. Mr. Kahlenberg who is a lawyer by profession and first ward alderman is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin law school and his fraternal affiliations are with Alpha Sigma Phi social and Phi Alpha Delta legal organizations. After their marriage James and Gladys lived in Manitowoc, Manitowoc Co., Wisconsin, where James was a lawyer.

FAMILY LIFE After the war, James, Gladys, and family moved to Sarasota, Sarasota Co., Florida in 1945 when he joined the Kahlenberg Laboratories there. They stayed there for the rest of their lives. When his niece, Christine Marie STROMWALL, the daughter of his sister Marian Ellen, was orphaned by the death of her parents in 1957, she was taken in by James and Gladys, where she completed her last year of high school at Sarasota High School and then earned a degree from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, at Lynchburg, Virginia. James and Gladys had at least two sons, Richard Sovde and Charles James.
