Frederic Paul Claussen was a graduate of Noble & Greenough School, cum laude, Harvard College and Boston University Law School. Prior to his appointment to fill a vacancy in 1969 where he served as Register of Probate for 39 years in the town of Barnstable, he practiced law for the firm of Spencer & Stone in Boston and also as trust officer of the Old Colony Trust Company.
Mr. Claussen served the longest term as an elected Republican official in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts at the time of his retirement. He had been a summer resident of Cotuit since 1960, and prior to that, he lived in Wellesley Hills.
His family is well known in Massachusetts, as his grandfather, Charles L. Gifford of Cotuit, served as a state Senator and a member of congress for 25 years, from 1922 to 1947.
Mr. Claussen has served in many roles in Cotuit and the surrounding communities, including the fire district, the historical society and chairman, town of Barnstable Advisory Committee. He was also past flotilla commander, U.S. Coast Guard Auxillary and past treasurer of the Barnstable Comedy Club.
Mr. Claussen loved the Loop Beach in Cotuit as well as his yacht on which he traveled to Martha's Vineyard, Cuttyhunk, Nantucket and Block Island.
