I THINK, OF YOU A LOT, STILL
MY FATHER FLEW NAVY. I WAS NAVY. IN THE SPRING, OF 1963, I BOUGHT YOUR CHRYSLER, 300H, (NOT KNOWING, IT HAD BEEN YOURS) WHICH I STILL HAVE. I KEPT IT, HOPING, YOU WOULD COME BACK FOR IT, SOMEDAY. I DID NOT KNOW, THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF YOUR DEATH, WHEN I, BOUGHT THE CAR. I WISH, I HAD KNOWN, YOU. I STILL REMEMBER, THE HALFPACK OF LUCKIES, I FOUND, IN THE CONSOLE AND THE MILEAGE CHECK. I'AM SO SORRY, FOR YOUR FAMILY. I THINK OF YOU, WHENEVR I, DRIVE YOUR CAR.

Today, is the last day, of 1998. Thirty-three, new years' eves ago, I was still in shock. Your ship left, just before Thanksgiving, I was just 14 and I never, saw you again. Neither my mother, or I, ever really accepted, your death. She drank herself to death, to avoid the reality and I refuse, to recite the P of A, because of the way, you and other veterans, have been treated, by the government. I missed you so much, at my wedding and then again, when each of your grand daughters, were born. I still, miss you and wish our lives, had been different. I have to believe, your death wasn't, a waste.

DECEMBER 29, 1999. IT WAS DECEMBER 2, 1965, WHEN WE RECEIVED WORD, THAT CDR., AUSTIN, HAD BEEN SHOT DOWN AND WAS PRESUMED LOST, ALONG, WITH HIS RIO., LTJG., JACOB LOGAN. I WAS SERVING ABOARD THE USS., KITTY HAWK, (CVA-63) WHERE I WORKED AS A YEOMAN, IN THE AIR OFFICE AND TALKED, TO CDR., AUSTIN DAILY. ALTHOUGH, THE DETAILS OF FACES HAVE FADED, WITH THE PASSAGE OF TIME, MR. AUSTIN AND THE OTHERS, THAT WE LEFT BEHIND ARE NEVER OUT, OF MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS. AS MR. AUSTIN KNEW SO WELL, HIS JOB WAS TO FLY THE MISSION, TO THE BEST OF HIS ABILITY. HE DID HIS DUTY, AS HE SAW FIT AND PAID THE ULTIMATE PRICE, TO PRESERVE OUR FREEDOM. THANK YOU, FROM THE BOTTOM, OF MY HEART.

I won't forget you.
Our dead brothers still live for us and bid us think of life, not death-of life to which in their youth they lent the passion and joy of the spring. As I listen, the great chorus of life and joy begins again and amid the awful orchestra of seen and unseen powers and destinies of good and evil our trumpets sound once more a note of daring, hope and will. I see them now as once I saw them on this earth. They are the same bright figures that come also before your eyes and when I speak of those who were my brothers, the same words describe yours.
