The regiment received this nickname since approx. 1/3 of its number died of disease such as typhoid from Jul-Dec 1863 in Louisiana & Mississippi after the Siege of Vicksburg. Others were discharged disabled and died on the trip home or soon after. There were so few able-bodied men left that the 38th Iowa was combined with the 34th Iowa Infantry for the rest of the Civil War.

No burial site listed. Based on others who died at Carrollton or New Orleans, his body would be moved to Chalmette National Cemetery after the war around 1867. By that time large numbers of headboards were vandalized or no longer legible. These soldiers were buried as unknowns.Julius is possibly among them.
