HIT BY CAR ON HIGHWAY, MAN KILLED SUNDAY
Rockwood Resident Meets Death In Storm; Companion Uninjured

Vittorio Manzardo, 52, of Rockwood, was killed at 6:45 o'clock Sunday night when he was struck by an automobile as he and a companion walked along Highway 141 at Rockwood during a heavy snowstorm.

Manzardo was struck by a Chevrolet coach driven by Matt Kocian, Jr., 20, of Forrestville. Door county Kocian was driving south on 141 and the accident occurred in front of the Prokash tavern.

Companion Uninjured
Accompanying Manzardo was Antonio Zucchi, also of Rockwood. Zucchi was in back of Manzardo and turned around in time to see the headlights of the approaching car. Zucchi stepped out of the way and shouted to Manzardo to "look out" but his alarm was unheeded. Kocian told authorities that because of the driving snow his visibility was reduced to a short distance. After his car struck the man, Kocian was unable to control the machine and it skidded across the road and struck a box containing gravel.

Manzardo was killed instantly, according to Dr. Theodore Teitgen, county coroner. He sustained a fractured skull, crushed chest and internal injuries. The coroner impaneled a jury consisting of Raman Gosz, John Zeman, Paul Gosz, Clarence Meyer, J.D. Prokash and Lester Lorenz, at the scene of the accident. The date for an inquest has not been set.

The sheriff's office was notified of the accident by Paul Gosz, who telephoned the jail. Sheriff Elmer Bergner and Deputy Sheriff Ferdinand Ewald drove out with the ambulance and County Traffic Officer Clarence Meihsner was dispatched to the scene by Radio Operator Harry Brandenburg. Coroner Teitgen was notified.

Manzardo's death was the county's first highway fatality of 1943. It was the second road death during the holidays. Richard Zahn was fatally injured Dec. 24, his death bein the 11th highway fatality in the county in 1942.

Manzardo's body was taken to the Wattawa, Urbanek & Schlei funeral home in this city. Efforts were being made today to contact an uncle residing in Connecticut, believed to be Manzardo's only relative in this country. Manzardo was a member of the American Legion and was employed at the ship yards.
