Civil War: Company E, 21st Michigan Infantry

Cyrus Howard Kent was born in New York in late 1830. He was the son of James Kent (1806, MA-1880, MI) and Elizabeth Ann Howard. He was living in Kent County, Michigan, with his parents in 1850 (US Census). He married Rebecca (1830, NY) about 1847. He was a farmer living with Rebecca and Albert at Caledonia, Michigan, in July 1860 (US Census). He was a 31-year-old resident at Caledonia when he enlisted as a private at Brownsville, Michigan, on August 13, 1862. His brothers James and Albert enlisted with him. They were all mustered into Company E, 21st Michigan Infantry, September 3, 1862. Cyrus was hospitalized with dysentery at Nashville, Tennessee, and discharged for disability on March 24, 1863. He remained in U.S. General Hospital No. 21 until he died on April 6, 1863, and was buried in the hospital cemetery. His remains were later transferred to the Nashville National Cemetery.
