James "Jimmy" Sexton was the oldest child of John Sexton and Margaret Ann McGough of County Clare, Ireland. Jimmy was born in the United States He and his wife Evelyn helped to raise his younger siblings after his parents early deaths. He taught himself to play the trumpet at a young age, and toured and played with many big bands and orchestras. He was famous for being the lead/solo Trumpeter for the Larry Clinton orchestra featuring singer Bea Wain. He also played with a Dorsey brother, and recorded Warner Bros. musical shorts which were played before feature films in the theaters.
