Charles Edward Ely was born in Ohio in 1844. He moved with his family to Minnesota Territory about 1857 and settled in Winona.

Charles was a 16 year old store clerk at the time the Civil War broke out. He enlisted on April 29, 1861 and mustered into "K" Co. MN 1st Infantry as a Private. He joined other men from the Winona area who were placed in Company K. He was a friend of Charles Goddard, who also served in the same company.

As the regiment began to move forward during their famous charge at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863, Ely was shot in the side of his right chest area. The ball exited near his back bone. After the battle he was carried to a field hospital near the battlefield. There he lay on the ground for four days before he was seen. He lay wrapped in a blanket. His pants were soaked with blood from his wound and were discarded. Once he was attended to, 1st Sgt Mathew Marvin saw a surgeon run a handkerchief through the hole in Charles' body, which the minnie ball had created. The surgeon then declared that he could not survive such a wound. However, it was decided to try to move him to a hospital in the rear in case he might recover. He, Goddard, and 1st Sgt Marvin were sent to the Cherry Street Hospital in Philadelphia. Fourteen of the men from the regiment were on the third floor, all there to recover from their wounds. While there Charles was visited by his mother. Mrs. Jane Ely and Mrs. Catherine Goddard had come to visit their wounded sons on July 27th. Mrs. Ely stayed until late October, caring for her boy. Unbelievably, Charles eventually returned to the regiment and was promoted to the rank of corporal. He was mustered out with the regiment, on May 5, 1864.

Charles Ely married Carolyn "Carrie" Moltzner on January 16, 1870 in Winona, Minnesota. The Ely's were parents to Helen Ely, Alfred Sully Ely, Kirk Henry Ely, Mamie Ely.

He died at the Soldiers Home in Hot Springs, South Dakota on August 19, 1916. He was buried in the De Smet Cemetery and later moved to the Woodlawn Cemetery in Winona, Minnesota, to be buried next to his father.
