MARQUETTE - Richard Dennis Bernard, age 72, of Marquette, entered eternal life Thursday evening, October 29, 2015, at UP Health System - Marquette, in the loving care of his wife, Patricia.
Dick was born April 12, 1943 in Midland, Texas, a son of Richard Louis and Mary Louise (DeLorbe) Bernard. Raised in Waterloo, Iowa, in an ethnic neighborhood where family ties were close, Dick was proud of his Irish heritage complete with red hair and freckles. He developed a love of music early in life from his mother, a classical pianist, who had him take music lessons. He graduated from Columbus High School in Waterloo and enrolled at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, where he received a Bachelors Degree in Social Work. Dick was employed for a time as a social worker in Cedar Rapids and it was there he met his future wife, Patricia, who was employed with the Department of Social Services. He continued his education at the University of Iowa in Iowa City where he received his Masters Degree in Social Work. The couple was married on June 19, 1971 and moved to Des Moines, Iowa. Dick's first job was with the Department of Social Services in Dubuque and, in 1973, the couple moved to Marquette where Dick had accepted a position with Child and Family Services. He later was employed as a social worker with Marquette General Hospital until he retired in 2007. Dick was an avid Green Bay Packer fan, enjoyed bicycling, fishing with his friend, Tom DeVilbiss, loved sports and classical music. Dick also had a passion for photography and, through the Marquette Camera Club, learned many of the essentials that led to winning entries in Marquette General Hospital competitions, some of which are still displayed at the hospital. He belonged to several environmental organizations, was a member of Planned Parenthood, and a member of the National Association of Social Workers.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Patricia; his brother, Paul Bernard of Ellicott City, MD; mother-in-law, Pauline Randall of Springville, IA; sisters-in-law, Marcia Cox of Belle Plaine, IA, Charlene (Tim) Zrudsky of Marion, IA, and Diana (Wayne) Hall of Springville, IA; his uncle, John DeLorbe of Waterloo, IA; many nieces; a nephew, Alex (Cassandra) Hall of San Antonio, TX; his special friend, Tom DeVilbiss of Skandia; and his godson, Colin DeVilbiss of Byron, MN. Dick was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law, Charles Randall; brother-in-law, Bobby Cox; aunts, Sr Antoinette DeLorbe, aunt and godmother, Margaret (the late Vern) Kobliska, and Vivian DeLorbe.
