He started in gangs as a youngster and continued as a young adult, forming his own "yakuza" family until he dissolved it in 1964 after serving time in prison and the death of a friend. Ando went into acting soon afterwards and his first acting role was the 1965 film "Blood and Rules", a story about himself. He continued in over 50 gangster films including "Street Mobster" (1972), "Boryoku gai" (1974), "Sympathy for the Underdog" (1971), and "Graveyard of Honor" (1975). After appearing in the film "The Big Boss' Head" in 1979, Ando retired and went into producing, supervising, and writing before resuming his acting career briefly in 1997.
