Elmer A. Abbott, age 88, was born in Cedar County, MO, on December 1, 1925, the fifth of six children born to Thomas Ernest Abbott and Blanche (Acker) Abbott. He went to be with the Lord on February 21, 2014.
He served in the U.S. Navy and was awarded a World War II Victory Campaign Medal, an American Medal, an Asiatic-Pacific medal, a China service medal, and a Good Conduct medal. He was stationed in Washington, D.C. and witnessed the inauguration of President Harry S. Truman and saw action on the USS Collett, a destroyer assigned to the Pacific Fleet for the purpose of disarming Japanese land mines.
Elmer was married to Marceline Evans on August 23, 1947 and to this union three children were born: Connie Abbott, Marcia Abbott, and Susan Abbott Lawson. He saw family as his greatest asset and enjoyed providing for them and spending time with them. Elmer was a lifelong farmer and worked hard to make his farm a success. He enjoyed reading about innovative farm methods, but knew when to implement changes and when to continue with existing practices. He was baptized on April 15, 1960, climbing off of his tractor to walk to the creek and accept the Lord as his Savior, then continuing with his field work. He was a member of Pape Christian Church and enjoyed communing with God in the outdoors. He appreciated nature and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He liked having good coon dogs and, during his younger years, often hunted every night during coon season. Turkey and deer hunting were also favorite past times.
Survivors include his wife, Marceline; son, Connie; daughter, Marcia; daughter and son-in-law, Susan Abbott Lawson and Bob Lawson; grandson, Judd Abbott Lawson; and step-grandson, John Cameron Lawson.
Preceding him in death were his parents; four brothers: Ernest Abbott, Robert Abbott, Orson Abbott, and Jack Abbott; and one sister, Adelaide Abbott Burks.
Funeral services for Elmer Abbott were held on Tuesday, February 25, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at Bland-Hackleman Chapel with Rev. Howard McPeak officiating. Musical selections were provided by Cassie Sayler. A military memorial service was conducted at the graveside and interment was in the El Dorado Springs City Cemetery under the direction of Bland-Hackleman Funeral Home.
