Rev. Dunkel pastored churches in East Tennessee and North Carolina and retired from Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Maryville. For the last 15 years Rev. Dunkel was well known for his internet devotional titled PTL (Praise the Lord!) which reached people all over the world. He touched innumerable lives with his message of praising the Lord in all things.
Preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Hazel Peters Dunkel; his parents Lucy and Elmore Dunkel; brother Henry Dunkle; sisters Lucille Miller and Pauline DeMarcus; and granddaughter Danita (DeeDee) Kennedy.
He is survived by his children, Larry (Charlene Lamb), Dan “Butch” (Millie), Diana (Ken) Nixon, Sally (Dan) Simmone, Connie (Bruce) Warford and sister Frances Waller. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
Celebration of Life will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Central Baptist Church of Fountain City. Graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, December 21, at Lynnhurst Cemetery in Knoxville. Officiating ministers will be Rev. Ron Mouser, Rev. Greg Long, Dr. Mike Smith and Rev. Jeff Cockerham.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Central Baptist Church of Fountain City Building Fund. Family will receive friends from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday at Central Baptist Church of Fountain City.
