CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Yona Stone Holroyd, age 82, of Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge in Charlottesville, Va., died May 9, 2011. She was born to the late Van Dorn Stone and Irene Billingsley Stone. She is also preceded in death by a brother, Van Dorn Stone, Jr.

Yona was raised in Lambert, Miss., and graduated from Lambert High School at age 16. She then earned her undergraduate degree at the Mississippi State College for Women, and graduate degrees at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. In 1952 she married William "Bill" McGinnis Holroyd from Mullins, W.Va. at the First Baptist Church of Lambert, Miss. She taught music at Phillips University while Bill served in the United States Air Force in Enid, Okla. Yona and Bill also lived, while raising their two children, in Nashville, Tenn., Cincinnati, Ohio, Indianapolis, Ind., and then, starting in 1965 onward, in Virginia. In 1966, Yona became head of the Department of Music at the newly formed Luther Rice College of Alexandria, Va. For a decade, Yona taught a variety of choral music, instrumental music, musicology, and music theory classes. Many of the students came from Africa to study at Luther Rice. Yona maintained a great interest in these students' success and, with her husband, financially supported the further education of one of these students for his undergraduate and graduate degrees. From 1969 until 1975, Yona was the organist and choir director of the Heritage Presbyterian Church of Springfield, Va. For over a decade starting in 1975, she was organist and choir director at Crossman United Methodist Church in Falls Church, Va. In the early 1980s, Yona thought it would be interesting to work as a computer programmer, so she enrolled in a two year certificate program at Northern Virginia Community College. She completed her computer programming certificate, although after further consideration she decided to devote her time to family and music. Yona spent many days helping, visiting, and taking care of her five grandchildren. She enjoyed attending classical music performances with Bill at the Kennedy Center and at George Mason University. Yona was always active and also enjoyed animals, especially dachshunds, grilling meat over charcoals in her back yard, tending to her rose bushes, considering investments, visiting art museums, putting on memorable church bells, choir and organ performances, following politics, watching professional basketball on TV, toasting to sparkling apple cider on New Year's Day, taking summer trips with family to Virginia Beach, watching sitcoms on TV, being a tour guide for visiting relatives to the many museums in Washington, D.C., visiting relatives in Mississippi and West Virginia, and most importantly to her, keeping up with, loving, and caring for her family.

Eight years ago Yona suffered a significant stroke and subsequently moved with Bill to Charlottesville, Va., where she was cared for at Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge. Yona was a joy for the many that visited with her during her time in Charlottesville.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Dr. William "Bill" McGinnis Holroyd; a son, Dr. Kenneth James Holroyd (Kendra), of Brentwood, Tenn.; a daughter, Dr. Suzanne Holroyd, of Charlottesville, Va.; a brother, Dr. Henry Deck Stone (Sandra), of Batesville, Miss.; five grandchildren, Lauren Elizabeth Holroyd, Michael James Holroyd, Jeffrey Thomas Diamond, William Scott Diamond and Savannah Brooke Diamond; sisters-in-law, Jo Ann Stone of Marks, Miss. and Dr. Betty H. Roberts- Kutin of San Diego, Calif.; and eleven nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, May 14, 2011, from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton, W.Va., with Dr. David Dockery officiating. Interment will follow in Athens Cemetery. Friends may call Saturday from 2 p.m. until the hour of service.
