1997- Austin Michael Alan Roberts -2015

Austin Roberts, a Spencer High School wrestler, died at Spencer Hospital after participating at the Spencer Invitational Saturday, said Tia Manwarren, a spokeswoman with the Spencer Hospital.

The 6-foot-4 Roberts wrestled in the 220-pound weight class for the Tigers, and was ranked sixth in Iowa in Class 3A. He took up the sport in the seventh grade and placed in the Class 2A state tournament last year, his first appearance at state, taking eighth at 220 pounds.

Roberts was also an offensive and defensive lineman for the Spencer Tigers football team; and was a winning competitor in his role as member of the Appaloosa Horse Club.

The school was opened on Sunday morning so that students and other members of the community could gather in remembrance of Austin. His coaches released a statement which said, in part, "Austin Roberts was a larger than life character. He had a large heart with a personality that could light up the room. We have had the great opportunity to watch Austin grow in recent years from a young child to mature young adult. His attitude about wrestling and football was second only to his attitude about life. He enjoyed many things other than sports including cars, trucks, motorcycles and snowmobiles.

"Through wrestling we saw his personality change from a shy, quiet kid into a confident, outgoing person, who others on the team and in the school could look up to."

Spencer Mayor Reynold Peterson spoke to the Sioux City Journal saying, “He was a fine young individual in the community and school. There’s been a tremendous response; it has been a total shock.”

He is preceded in death by his grandmother, Margaret Schomaker; his great-grandparents: Barney and June Roberts, Violet and Milton Hubbard, Mable and Delbert Schomaker and Betty and Pappy Pasierb.

Left to cherish his memory are his parents, Travis and Lori Roberts of Dickens, IA; his two sisters,[redacted]; maternal grandfather, [redacted] of Spencer, IA; paternal grandparents, [redacted] of Dickens, IA; uncles and aunts: [redacted] ; other relatives and many friends.
