EUGENE ELMER STRANDBERG
1953-2015

Gene was born April 17, 1927 to Swedish parents Elmer and Hulda Strandberg in Portland, Oregon. He had four sisters he liked to tease, which probably helped mold his great sense of humor. Gene was an
extremely hard worker. As a young boy, Gene delivered the Oregonian newspaper. He attended Benson High school and worked in the Kaiser Ship Yards. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the Navy and served on the aircraft carrier USS Sarratoga, where he learned to box. After an honorable discharge he returned home to Portland, Oregon. Gene started working at Fred Meyer's before getting into the bakery business where he began delivering products for Wonder, Langendorf, and Franz bakeries.

In April of 1953 Gene was introduced to Eleanor June Reberger by her friend at a dance. It was love at first sight, they married six months later. They were blessed with three children Craig, Karen and Jon. Gene was very proud of his family and always tried to set a good example in everything he did. Gene and Eleanor were married almost 62years. He was a perfectionist! His yards were well manicured and everyone wanted to know how he got his grass so green. Gene liked to buy low mileage used cars, clean them up and resell them. He was a strong swimmer, good cook, enjoyed shopping, and loved to go fishing, golfing and take Sunday drives.

While working at Franz Bakery for 28 years he was also part owner in a mobile home park. He retired at 57 years old and then purchased a Greeting Card Business. He eagerly built up the card route to turn
around and sell it to retire for the second time. Gene and Eleanor had a wonderful retirement for over 20 years, 15 of which were snow birding to Arizona. Gene took up lawn bowling and was so good others liked to be on his team. Unfortunately, Gene's health began declining and they returned to Portland full time. Eleanor spent the last several years caring for him.

Gene was loved by all and will be dearly missed by his surviving wife Eleanor, sons Craig and Jon, daughter Karen McOmber, spouses Annie & Dennis, grandsons: Kevin Strandberg, Andy McOmber and Erik McOmber, sister Bernice Siebenthal and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his sisters Evelyn Risher, Eleanor Edstrom and Virginia Jensen.
