He served during the Civil War in Company E, 93rd Illinois Infantry out of Bureau County, Illinois. He served for 18 months and fought at Jacksonville, Mississippi, Champion Hills, and during the siege and capture of Vicksburg, where he was wounded in the right side from a musket, which was later the cause of his discharge, as well as the malaria he had contracted. He received a military pension for his service. He married Elizabeth Rachel Rinehart on August 19, 1862 in Bureau County, Illinois.
