Late in the afternoon of May 1, 1863, two barefoot Murphree girls (Celia and Winnie Mae) marched three Yankee soldiers into the Confederate bivouac at the Royal Crossing of the Black Warrior River in Blount County, Alabama, and surrendered them together with their horses and arms which the girls had surreptitiously removed while the soldiers lay sleeping. For this act of heroism each of the girls was given a horse and they rode away. According to the story, General Nathan B. Forrest, accepted the surrender and made the reward.

[The story of the capture of the soldiers according to family tradition, re-told by Captain Eugene A. Maynor, grandson of Celia Murphree Reneau]

Mrs. John Reno, mother of Mrs. W. F. Maynor, of Oneonta, died at her home in Hardwick's beat last Thursday. Mrs. Reno was 57 years old and had been a member of the Methodist Church for 45 years and was a model Christian woman. Peace to her memory.
