Joseph was the son of Peleg Arnold and Margaret Slocum of Exeter, Rhode Island. He was married to Elizabeth "Bessie" Dawley, the daughter of John Dawley and Elizabeth Helme. Joseph is enumerated on the 1830 and 1840 censuses in North Kingstown, RI. He and Bessie had four known children:
* Frances, b. 1809, d. 1841
* Joseph, b. NK 11 Feb 1811, d. NK 8 April 1863, was living in Providence in 1850 with wife Eliza, b. 1816, and daughter Eliza, b. 1848. The same family was living in N. Kingstown in 1860.
* Esther, b. 1814, d. 1914, m. (1) Samuel Arnold and (2) Bernard Pierce
* Mary, b. 1816
The burial location for Joseph and Bessie Arnold has not been determined. While most of Joseph's Arnold uncles had family cemeteries, his father did not. Joseph and Bessie, therefore, may be buried in one of the Dawley cemeteries in Exeter, but it isn't certain which one has her family members.
