GEORGE TAPPAN, (Many records for his father use the spelling Toppan), was born on 6 January 1807 at Newburyport, Essex County, Massachusetts to Abner Toppan & Elizabeth Stanford-Toppan.

In the 1912 book, Certain Comeovers, Henry Howland Crapo writes that he was in possession of portraits of both of George's parents, Elizabeth Stanford-Toppan & Abner Toppan. Black & white photos of their portraits have been added to their memorials.

George's uncle, Hon. Richard Stanford (1867 - 1816) served 10 consecutive terms (20 years) as a US Congressman representing the state of North Carolina.

Census records state that George was a Grocery Store Merchant.

George married Serena Davis on 10 Nov 1829 at Newburyport, Essex County, Massachusetts, and they had FIVE children of record:

Sarah Ann Davis Tappan-Crapo (1831 - 1893),
Charles A Tappan (1838 - 1839),
Serena Davis Tappan (1834 - 1838), and
William C Tappan (1842 - 1909).

George passed away on 16 August 1857 in Massachusetts, and he was laid to rest at Oak Grove Cemetery, New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts.
