General, Judge, State Senator, Dean of DePauw University. A.C Downey was admitted to the bar in 1841 and practiced with Amos Lane and Theodore Gazlay in Lawrenceburg. When Ohio County was formed in 1844, Downey moved to Rising Sun.

A. C. became a judge, president of the 3rd Circuit Court in 1850, holding this position for 2 years before moving to the 1st Circuit from 1852 to 1858. He then resigned to practice Law and organized the School of Law at DePauw University, and was a Professor there from 1854 to 1858.
During the Civil War was a Brigadier General of the 4th Brigade Indiana Legion. In 1862 was elected State Senator and served til 1866. Elected to Indiana Supreme Court in 1870 serving 1 six year term, declining renomination. Dean of Faculty of Law 1888-1890 at DePauw.
A.C. returned to the bench once more from 1891 to 1897 on the 7th Circuit Court.
