A. C. became a judge, president of the 3rd Circuit Court in 1850, holding this position for 2 years before moving to the 1st Circuit from 1852 to 1858. He then resigned to practice Law and organized the School of Law at DePauw University, and was a Professor there from 1854 to 1858.
During the Civil War was a Brigadier General of the 4th Brigade Indiana Legion. In 1862 was elected State Senator and served til 1866. Elected to Indiana Supreme Court in 1870 serving 1 six year term, declining renomination. Dean of Faculty of Law 1888-1890 at DePauw.
A.C. returned to the bench once more from 1891 to 1897 on the 7th Circuit Court.
