Carleton had been active in the hotel business most of his life. After graduating from the University of Southern California he became general manager of the US Grant Hotel in San Diego. After 5 years at the Grant he became managing director of the Hotel del Coronado during the Alessio ownership of the hotel. When Alessio sold the hotel in 1963, Carl left the Hotel del Coronado for a while to become Vice President, Southern Region, for Handlery Hotels. In this capacity, he also managed the El Cortez Hotel in San Diego. In 1965 he returned to the Del as Executive VP and General Manager. Later he would be President of the Hotel del as well as General Manager.
He was known throughout the United States as one of the top managers in the hotel business.
