John was the son of John Eager Howard, Jr. who died the year after he was born, and Cornelia Read Howard. In 1844 he inherited "Roseland" in Baltimore County from his grandfather, Col. John Eager Howard's brother. In 1847 he fought at the Battle of Chapultepec, Mexico. Late in 1860 his mother took him to the exclusive McLean Asylum for the Insane outside of Boston where he died two years later and was buried in Holyhood Cemetery in Brookline, Mass. In Dec of the same year his mother died in Baltimore and was taken to be buried next to her son.

After the war he returned to private life, where he remained. Several years ago his mind became affected, and so continued up to the time of his death. He was a bachelor."
