Obituary

August 2, 1923 - April 20, 2015 FREDRICK HOPSON McCRORY of Vestavia Hills, Alabama passed away peacefully during the early hours of April 20, 2015. Fred was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Sybil Kendrick McCrory, and is survived by his daughter, Debbie McCrory Watson (Clark), his son, Mike McCrory, four grandchildren, Melanie Anderson (Reynolds), Beth Ann Hill (Graham), Andrew McCrory and Eric McCrory, and four great grandchildren. A native of Greensboro, Alabama, Fred was a decorated combat veteran who served bravely with the Third Marine Division in the Pacific Theater during World War II. There he participated in some of the fiercest infantry battles of that campaign including Peleliu, Bougainville and Guadalcanal. Upon conclusion of military service, McCrory played professional baseball, attended the University of Alabama and then embarked on a successful business career, beginning in Montgomery with Alabama Power Company and later in Birmingham where he served as General Credit Manager of O'Neal Steel until his retirement. Fred also attended the Harvard University Graduate School of Business. An avid civic contributor, McCrory was a member of, among other things, the Jefferson County Judicial Commission, the Board of Directors of Cooper Green Hospital and the Jefferson County Sheriffs Reserves. He was particularly enthusiastic about Vestavia Hills, where he enjoyed several terms on the Board of Education and the City Council and was selected as president of each body. Many will remember Fred's tireless landscaping work not only at his residence, but also along the rights of way of Vestridge and Badham Drives. He was a charter member of Vestavia Hills Baptist Church, which he faithfully attended and served for many years while his health permitted. Following a private graveside service, family and friends will gather for a service of remembrance and thanksgiving at Vestavia Hills Baptist Church on Thursday, April 23, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. Afterwards the family will welcome the opportunity to visit with friends at the church. Gifts in memory of Fred McCrory may be given to Vestavia Hills Baptist Church, 2600 Vestavia Drive, Vestavia Hills, Alabama 35216.
