The Rev. Jesse Edson was born in Buckland, Massachusetts on 12 Feb 1773. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1794, and studied theology with Rev. John Emerson, of Conway. Rev. Edson was licensed by the Hampshire Association on Aug. 4, 1795 and supplied, for a time, the church in Gill. He was ordained to the pastoral office in Halifax, Vermont on November 23, 1796; the Rev. John Emerson preached on the occasion. Rev. Edson died as pastor in Halifax, Vermont on Dec. 14, 1805, aged 32. "He was very popular with the young people of Halifax."
"During his ministry, ninety-nine were added to the church, eleven of whom were received by letter. In the fall and winter of 1797 and 1798, there was a general revival of religion in the town, of the fruits of which, forty-three united with the Congregational church in 1798. A considerable number united with the Baptist church the same year. Mr. Edson was highly acceptable to his people, both as a minister and as a pastor, receiving their affectionate confidence. As a preacher, he was sound in doctrine, though not characterized as a doctrinal preacher. In his intercourse with his people, he was courteous, introducing the subject of religion in an easy and happy manner. His person was tall and slender. His preparations for the pulpit were made with readiness. He interested himself in the young people of his charge, and was accustomed to preach to them one sermon a year. Mr. Edson's salary was one hundred pounds. He died at an early age, much lamented by his people, leaving a widow and three children."

Inscription
"My flesh shall slumber in the ground,
Till the last trumpet's awful sound;
Then burst the chains is sweet surprise,
And in my Saviour's image rise."
