Orphaned at age 4, Mary and her sister, Anne Lide Wilds, were raised by their grandmother, Elizabeth Barlow Henderson Ross. Both sisters were quite wealthy. In 1841, at age 14, Mary married William Clark McDowell (age 26). He died about 1853. There were no children from the marriage.

In Mar. 1855, Mary Wilds McDowell married attorney Fredrick Epps Mayo and they had four children: Anna, William, Fred, Jr., and Peyton Wilds.
