She was born on January 5, 1912, in Madison, the daughter of the late Alonza Jackson Burke and Nettie Fishback Burke and wife of the late John Thomas Carpenter. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Robbie Jeffries and Helen B. Burke; one great-grandchild, Casey Frye; and a daughter-in-law, Barbara Carpenter.
She was a faithful member of the Robinson River Primitive Baptist Church in Brightwood. She retired from E.A. Clore and Sons in 2001 after 60 plus years.
She is survived by three daughters, Thelma C. Perryman and her husband, Edd, of Culpeper, Virginia C. Utz and her husband, Royce, of Oak Park, Margaret C. Hawkins and her husband, Ronnie, of Madison; two sons, Harvey C. Carpenter of Charlottesville and John T. Carpenter Jr. and his wife, Evelina, of Brightwood; six grandchildren, Michael Perryman, Denise Hunt, Rhonda Salmon, Debbie Frye, Pamela Dove and Leslie Hurlock; and nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, March 11, 2011, at Robinson River Primitive Baptist Church conducted by Edlers Toliver Utz and Gary Utz with interment at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday, March 10, 2011, at the Preddy Funeral Home in Madison.
