William Joseph Kunze, 83, of Burlington, died at Great River Medical Center.

He was born in Glatz, Germany to Reinhold and Anna Reichel Kunze. On September 16, 1947, he married Charlotte C. Schuff at St. John the Baptist Catholic Chruch in Burlington. She died August 21, 1997. On February 13, 2000, he married Marjorie Bell in Mesa, Arizona.

He was a graduate of St. Paul's High School in Burlington. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a medic in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone in maintenance in the central office for over 36 years, retiring in 1983. He was a 50-year member of SS. John and Paul Catholic Church, Kinghts of Columbus since 1944, Moose, Eagles, and American Legion. He wintered for years in Mesa. He enjoyed square dancing, winemaking, gardening, roses, picture framing making, woodworking, golfing, and camping. He also made chairs of macrame.

Survivors include his wife of Burlington; son, John Kunze of Nauvoo, Illinois; daughter, Gretchen Greer of Ottumwa; step-daughter, Judy Worley of Sperry; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; one great-grandson; three step-great-grandchildren; and sister, Anne Bishop of Burlington.

Funeral services were held at Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. William Wiegand officiating.
