Cathryn M. Hindenburg, 96, of Sycamore, Ill., died Wednesday, April 14, 2010, at her home.

Born Sept. 3, 1913, in Chicago, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Bowman) Westhouse, she married Elmer G. Hindenburg on June 15, 1935, in Chicago.

Cathryn was employed by the Sycamore Hospital, working in its dietary department. She then worked for the Northern Illinois University Registration and Records Office for 15 years.

She was a member of the Sycamore Veterans of Foreign Wars – all of her brothers served in all of the branches of the Armed Services during World War II. Cathryn was very artistic, she took classes and did oil color to photographs for many people. She loved to draw and was very crafty and creative. She continued to color in books with colored pencils until she died.

Cathryn enjoyed bowling and bowled on two leagues into her '80s. She loved being with people and traveling. After her retirement, Cathryn went on many trips with the friends she met at NIU.

She is survived by her three daughters, Lois (Oscar) Johnson of Belvidere, Beverly (Franklin) Nielsen of Elburn and Carole (William) Boies of Sycamore; seven grandchildren, Wes (Lynne) Johnson of Belvidere, Kathryn (Mike) Great of Carol Stream, Michael (Mary) Nielsen of Menomonee, Wis., Thomas Nielsen and Shari Nielsen, both of Elburn, Scott Boies of Eagle River, Wis., and Wendi (Kevin) Jandt of Arlington Heights; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Allen of California; four brothers, Vernon Westhouse of Virginia, Arthur (Karen) Westhouse of California, Edward Bein of Illinois and Marion Bollar of Indiana; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer; one son, Raymond; four brothers, John, Joseph Jr., Willard and Richard; and three sisters, Mary Brown, Lillian McNew and Mildred Robertson.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery, Sycamore.
