It is believed Jess was in a truck during a severe West Texas sandstorm northwest of Lubbock (possibly at Plainview) when he collided with a train. Jess was killed, 1 Apr 1924, in the collision and was buried in Lubbock close to the family plot of his older brother, Will Martin. His wife Nola remarried and continued to live in Vernon, Wilbarger, Texas.
