This is my great, great, grandfather, Richard…the father of my James Frank Lumpkins who married Anna Lou Grimes.

Rev. James Marvin Lumpkins

B. 26 Apr 1837 Lawrence Co., TN

D. 22 Aug 1893 Lawrence Co., TN
He was the son of William Harrison Lumpkins and Eliza Virginia Smith.

James Marvin served in Co. D., 9th. TN Calvary, Col. Biffle, CSA during the Civil War. After the Civil War ended, he took the Oath of Allegiance at Columbia, Maury Co., TN.

James' first wife was Sarah Malinda Springer whom he married 2 Feb 1860 in Lawrence Co., TN. Sarah Malinda Springer was the daughter of Jacob Springer and Malinda Caldonia Todd. Sarah Malinda was born 3 Aug 1844 in Lawrence Co., TN and died 16 Sep 1865 in Lawrence Co., TN. She was buried in the Old Belew Cemetery in Lawrence Co., TN. James Marvin and Sarah Malinda were the parents of three children: Sarah Caroline, James Frank and William Samuel "Sam" Lumpkins. Sarah Malinda died when William Samuel was only about seven months old. She was my great, great, grandmother.

The second wife of James was Eliza C. Belew whom he married 2 Oct 1867 in Lawrence Co., TN. Eliza C. Belew was the daughter of Robert Glen Belew and Lucinda A. Pullen. Eliza was born 27 Dec 1847 in Lawrence Co., TN and died 16 Mar 1873 in Lawrence Co., TN. I believe that Eliza C, Belew is also buried in the Old Belew Cemetery and the inscription on her rock reads E. C. Lumpkins. James Marvin and Eliza were the parents of four children: Tealy Alice, Mollie L., Anna Elizabeth and Robert Lee Lumpkins.

James Marvin's third wife was Melinda Caroline Kelly whom he married 21 Sep 1873 in Lawrence Co., TN. Caroline was the daughter of Lewis Kelly and Elizabeth J. Hood. Caroline was born 24 Feb 1853 in GA and died 12 Oct 1910 in Lawrence Co., TN. She is buried beside James Marvin at the Cedar Hill Cemetery near Pleasant Point, TN, just a few steps from the grave of James Marvin's son, James Frank Lumpkins. They were the parents of eight children: Margaret Lavenia, Katherine Jane, Lewis Napolean, Johnie Chapel, Charles Frank, Richard Earl, Willie Sue and Marion Luther Lumpkins. According to the family Bible, Johnie Chapel Lumpkins was born in Lawrence Co., Tennessee on Dec. 23, 1880 and died Dec. 17, 1884.

James Marvin Lumpkins was the father of fifteen children, all born in Lawrence Co., TN. He is referred to, in some records, as James Marion instead of James Marvin, but my grandmother, Minnie Belle Lumpkins Bailey, always called her grandfather, James Marvin.
