Son of Christian Burkholder and Hetty Crist. Possibly born in 1816 or 1818. Henry owned a saw mill in Lynchburg, Lynchburg County, Virginia. He is a resident of Augusta County, Virginia, according to the 1850, 1860, and 1870 census records. He is listed as a miller in 1850 and 1860, and as a farmer in 1870. Family stories tell that his mill was burned during the Civil War. He married Elizabeth Ruebush about 1839 in Augusta County, Virginia. They had 6 children, 4 who lived to adulthood.
