James Irvin Ray, 79, of Springfield died at 5:10 p.m. Wednesday at St. John's Hospice.
He was born Oct. 22, 1914, in Harristown, the son of James S. and Mary Ida Lee Whalen Ray.
He married Erma Sharp in July, 1986 in Springfield.
Preceding him in death were two sons, James Mark Ray and James Jerry Ray; and a grandson.
Mr. Ray had been a resident of Springfield since 1919 and was employed as a blacksmith for the C&IM Railroad for many years.
He was also a member and trustee of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, International Organization of Blacksmiths and Boilermakers, and a village trustee of Grandview, serving for six years.
Surviving are his wife, Erma; a son, James Terry Ray of Vancouver, Wash.; a stepson; two daughters, Karen Sue Turnbull of Casper, Wyo., and Patricia Ann Claytor of Kissimmee, Fla.; four stepdaughters; and three sisters, Elsie M. Albright, Eloise M. Hill, and Lillian Kennedy, all of Springfield, and Charlotte Theobald of Wisconsin.
Funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, with the Rev. David Schauer officiating.
Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park.
Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
