Emma was the daughter of German immigrants named Albert Helmut Gustav "Gus" Flunker and Friederike S. "Freda" Bluball. The family lived in Jersey County, Illinois, and her father worked as a stone mason.

Emma married William George Niemeyer on 19 Feb 1917. He was a farmer, and they were the parents of 9 children.

Two sons, Louis and Albert, died when they were toddlers. A third son, private first class Howard Niemeyer, was seriously wounded in action on the final day of the Korean War, just 20 minutes before the order was given to cease fire. He died 4 days later at the age of 22.

Emma died in early 1960 at the age of 66. Her husband, William, passed away less than 4 months later.

Emma's funeral services were conducted at Wards Funeral Home in Pleasant Hill, Pike County, Illinois.
